Star Wars Retold
This is the funniest thing I've seen in a long, long time.
Star Wars: Retold (by someone who hasn't seen it) from Joe Nicolosi on Vimeo.
(Just in case that isn't working, here's the link.)
Enjoy!!

Sixteen Things
I've been double tagged! First by hellobunnygirl, then the Plush Team, so here goes!

1. I don't eat meat, but I think the charred meats they cook outside of grocery stores smell amazing.
2. I'm a fragrance addict. I only put one on once a day(just a little bit, really!), but I have at least 11 on my vanity right now.
3. I just got a new pug puppy and I'm on high alert for potty breaks! I'm terrified of my house smelling like pee.
4. I NEED the sun to be able to function in life. I think I may be part plant. Without it, I'm just a zombie. A sad, sad zombie.
5. I worry a lot!
6. I've lived in California almost my whole life, but I've never seen a movie star. (Although I did talk to the girl who played Kitty on Arrested Development at my last show...so my perfect record just got ruined!)
7. I co-wrote 2/3 of a Star Wars fan fiction trilogy with my best friend when I was 12-13. Then I discovered real live boys!
8. I'm kind of a book glutton. My reading stack is always multiple feet high. (Mostly non-fiction)
9. I have really severe hypoglycemia, so I am tired (and other fun things) a lot.
10. I love to play games. Balderdash is probably my favorite (Making up random stuff! Yay!).
11. My hair has been every color from platinum blonde to a blueish black, and back again. (and again!)
12. I still play video games. (Current obsessions: Animal Crossing and Paper Mario for Wii)
13. I haven't had tv reception for over 5 years. Yet, I'm all caught up on Lost. (Thanks, internet!)
14. I worked as an office temp for a long, long time. Best job: maintenance office at a Six Flags. Worst job: Shipping office at a dairy.
15. I can't bake anything edible, but I have allllll the supplies.
16. I'd very much like to have some pet chickens someday.

Why wasn't there a shop update yesterday?
I mean, really. You were doing so good, sticking to a schedule and all...
Wait, wait, I have a really good excuse. Here it is:

Ta-DAAA! It's a new pug! He's a five month old sweetheart named...um, I don't know yet. Lando? Charlie? Something! (We've been calling him "Other Dog")

We just brought him home yesterday afternoon. It's still early yet, so I don't want to go on and on about what a good dog he is and jinx it. Suffice it to say that I'm a wreck on high alert for signs he may have to go potty, and he's pretty relaxed. So I think things are going to be ok.
If you want to see more photos, hop on over to Flickr!
Anywho, I've set up a sort of temporary studio in the living room, so as to better watch him. (Him? In my studio? With my RE-MENTS? And Chickenpants? NOT YET!!) So hopefully I will be getting things sort of back to normalish soon. ^-^

This should be a post about a shop update...
But it ISN'T! Instead of business as usual (which lately, has been anything but), allow me to share with you my latest pet project: The Chickenpants House! (And Cafe!)
A long standing weakness for all things Re-Ment finally bloomed last weekend. I made the very logical, smart decision that the Chickenpants surely needed an place to live. And a chick spice rack. Oh! And this broom set. And tea set. And mugs. And...hmmm, do we need a fridge? (Answer: Yes! Not that we have one...yet.)
Enough talk! Have a look:
(Just in case that isn't working, here's the link.
I re-purposed some shelves for this. I covered them in scrapbooking papers. In the cafe, the area rug is a piece of vintage felt. I haven't found a floor I like yet for the kitchen/dining room.
I'm considering this just the beginning. I'd love to make a bedroom, and maybe a porch. Of course, the existing rooms are far from finished.
And yes, I do seem to have lost my mind.
Also yes: There will certainly be some new Chickenpants Limiteds springing from this!

Stuffed & Stuff
I'm a little belated in reporting this, but behold! I am in Stuffed!

Well, The Needle is. (Which means that I am. Narcissist much?) Hooray!
In other news, I've been painting some dogs.
Dogs like this:

(Sorry for the bad photos...I haven't figured out how to work around the lighting in this place yet.)
Shocker! It's a French Bulldog! A French Bulldog who chewed the legs off an Ottoman! Bad dog!
These new paintings are all about how we love dogs, and dogs are adorable and wonderful...and they also do some horrible things. Like this English Bulldog:

I hope you get a kick out of them. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Two whole years

(Well, two whole years last Monday. But updating this blog in a timely fashion would be breaking with tradition.)
I just want to say thank you to everyone for reading! I hope you'll continue to pop in.
I think 2009 is going to be another great year...probably full of change. For instance, Topanga here is modeling my latest obsession...crochet. What began as a scarf decided to turn into a pug beret. Much more fun.
Today's projects include photographing her hat, updating the shop, and sharing some new paintings with the world...although I think that last one is going to fall onto tomorrow's plate.
Stay tuned!

On Maisel and Dog Paintings
Still slogging through Eric Maisel's book. The greatness seems to come and go in waves. I'm sure if you consider yourself a "serious" artist, it all applies. Personally, I find the "serious" artist stuff a bit alienating. He made a comment about "cat paintings"- as if somehow, every painting of a cat (or, we are to presume, any other animal) is somehow not "Art". Instead, it is something lesser than. This really ticked me off.
As someone who paints/plushes animals, and loves many other paintings/creations of animals, I must disagree. Certainly, there are hacks out there, just as there are in any field. But how could somebody dismiss a whole subject matter as unworthy?
OK, rant over. I have something lovely to share with you.

Of books, blocks, and ArtFire
My thoughts are all scattered around, and the husb is home sick from work, so basically I'm home sick from work, too.
I've been looking a lot at analytics data, and realizing that I don't always do a good job of posting what it is I'm working on. So here are a few bits:
I'm reading Eric Maisel's Creativity for Life
. I've been in a major, major creative slump lately, so I've called in some help. (On the plus side, my Animal Crossing town is doing great!) I've only just started the book, and although he is focusing on Art with a capital A, it's still very helpful. I bought it for the chapters on the artist's personality (i.e. depression, anxiety, narcissism, yadda yadda) because they seemed to ring true. And because I am in a dark spot. (Which is a soft way of saying "depressed and anxious and making everyone around me nuts") And I could always use some validation.
One of the main ideas that's struck me so far is that a lack of doing is very likely the heart of my problem. Although, I also got this same bonk over the head from a recent article on 43 Folders. (Have you been over there lately? Big change!)
I wanted to step back from creating for a bit to take an objective look at what I was doing, and to see if I should change. I think this was a mistake. For me, slowing down turned into stopping which turned into sadness. Manic creating = happiness. Sort of.
In other news, I've started up an ArtFire shop. (http://absolutelysmall.artfire.com/ It feels like I'm cheating on my beloved Etsy. I'm considering this to be an experiment. I'll hang onto the shop for a year or two, and see how the site evolves. Right now it's a ghost town. And it doesn't have the good design that Etsy has. But, they are advertising like crazy, so we'll see. If you want to conduct your own experiment in cheating on Etsy, join me, won't you? $7 a mo/ for life, no other fees, etc etc. (That's how they snookered me into joining!)
Now that Etsy has Google Analytics all hooked up, it should make comparing how things are going on both sites even easier. I'll keep you posted.

- 10:29 OK, I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm signing up for ArtFire. Anyone else on there? How has it been?
- 11:14 Question for Artfire folks: have you or anyone you know sold anything on Artfire? I'm looking around and it's like a ghost town!
- 11:30 Can I just go on record here and say that I love Etsy, it's been wonderful to me, and I really have no reason to go anywhere else?

Shop Update Wednesday!
It's that day again! Time to share some new creatures with you all.
First, I'd like to share a wee collage. This is something new for me. I'm probably not doing it 'right', but it is fun, so there.

I've been hoarding old books and scraps of paper for awhile, and I figured now's the time to break them out. The sentences in the collage are actually from a grade 3 English textbook. They were too perfect to alter! Anyway, here's it's perch in the shop.
And of course, there have been some new Chickenpants arrivals:

From right to left: Mason Chickenpants, Victor Chickenpants, Edith Chickenpants.
And one big, stylish goat!

The big'uns are unbelievably hard to photograph well. Yet I continue making them, because I adore the finished creature. You can check her out here.
That's the highlights for this week. As usual, there are several other new creatures in the shop...hop on over and say hi!
Thanks for reading, and happy Wednesday!

Something just as wonderful as macarons to share
I won't even start talking about the whole driving around for hours-then spending $20 on macarons-then having them be so special I'm a bit afraid to eat them debacle. No, wait, that's pretty much it.
Instead, let me share with you a delightful French treat via video:

Rigmarole
Rigmarole is one of those great, very simple games that you can do almost anywhere. And I have. My cousin Bonnie and I have a long standing tradition of playing this game whenever we're bored. It's a great mini game to play when the other people around you are doing something that tries your patience. All you need is at least one willing partner.
For those not yet initiated, this is how you play.
What you need: A piece of paper and a pen. Really, that's it. Oh, and I guess wild imagination helps.
The first person writes two lines. Then you fold the paper over the first line and pass it to the next person. Then they write two lines, fold the paper over their top line, and pass it to the next person. And so on, until the page is filled.
So, as promised to said cousin, here are two of the finished stories from this weekend's very, very long game of Trivial Pursuit. That game may still be going on, actually.
My lines are in green, hers are in blue.
Once upon a time there was a large magic bicycle. It was red, shimmery,
and had sparkly streamers on the handlebars. It was powered by unicorn
eyelash dust, and it had a million butterfly wings to make it fly. Also,
it had two horns on it's head from which it shot lazerbeams. It mostly ate
small berries and pixie dust, and also pixie sticks. And it had a special
wand which it would hold in it's mouth and use it to hit small children. But,
mostly it just spun around in circles and made enchanting noises, while
snorting. But the best thing of all was the woodchucks that would pop
out of the ground & shriek "We surrender!"
Once upon a time there was a town where nobody ever wore pants. They thought it was normal! They would just walk around, their shoes flapping against their heels, making flapping noises. They didn't wear socks, though, because those would cover their legs, which were always bare. It got cold so he decided to put on some pants. That solved the cold & bare leg issue. Later, they went to the bar where they drank non-alcoholic beer until they could barely even stand up. "We should never have put on pants in the first place. Look what's become of people when they wear no pants. This is how they end up. So now everyone decided to wear pants, and to wear them proudly.
Here's the part where I heartily encourage you to play this game yourself. And then email me some finished results. (absolutelysmall {{{at}}}gmail) Maybe we could post them up here on the blog...
